Everette Lee DeGolyer, Sr. was born on October 9, 1886, in Greensburg, Kansas, the eldest of three children born to John and Narcissa DeGolyer. He began his career in geology as a freshman at the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 1905 and spent the following summer as a field assistant for the United States Geological Survey. Nell Virginia Goodrich DeGolyer was born on November 11, 1886 in New Florence, Missouri, the first of six children. Her parents, Hugh G. Goodrich, a dentist, and Emma Goodrich, eventually moved the family to Norman, Oklahoma, a college town, so their children would have access to higher education.
